Local Treasure - Café Sunflower in Rockville

(C) 2017 Sunflower Bakery

While I was working in Rockville the past year, I came across a lovely sweet shop called Café Sunflower. The Café offers items made at the Sunflower Bakery as well as a small selection of sandwiches from another company. For their fresh-brewed coffees, they offer a customer loyalty card = 10 coffees, 11th free. The products are nut free and several are gluten free. Most importantly, delicious!

The Café is special place in many ways. It started in 2010 and seven years later has provided over 42,000 hours of employment training in baking, pastry arts, and customer service for “adults with learning differences”. I commend Joey Nowicki, Café the manager, for his patience and perseverance in training and working with them and emphasizing transferrable job skills.

I made lots of dear friends, in the many months I’ve gone there. Several who have been graduated and are still missed. They are always glad to see me and notice the days I didn’t get over there for lunch or coffee break. There is joy in being known by name (and by order) by having a personal relationship with them. To me, this is what life is all about.

For our Jewish friends and neighbors, it is kosher, pareve under the Rabbinical Council of Greater Washington, and Pas Yisroel as well as Yoshon.

If you know of someone who could benefit from the training programs:
